Porto Alegre weather is characteristically subtropical, featuring hot humid summers, and cool to mild winters. The domination of the warm and moist maritime tropical air creates summer conditions that share many similarities to those usually associated with the humid tropics. The city is positioned on the southerly side of the equator, thus making Porto Alegre's seasons different to those of Europe and the USA. What this effectively means is that the summer months fall between December and February, and winter runs from June to August. Average precipitation is high and regular throughout the year. Annual precipitation varies from 100 inches near the coastline to 25 inches further inland

Porto Alegre weather during the summer months (December, January, and February) has the honor of experiencing the hottest conditions of the year. Summer daytime temperatures often reach 32 °C, while the high humidity levels make weather in Porto Alegre extremely muggy. The majority of summer precipitation occurs during thunderstorms or during the occasional appearance of a tropical storm, hurricane or cyclone. The month of November is commonly the driest, with precipitation levels of approximately 8 cm, which comes in sharp contrast with June, the month with the majority of rainfall, which averages rain of 13 cm.

Porto Alegre weather during winter is renewed by its changeability, although mild, windy conditions dominate for the biggest part of the season. Common winter temperatures range from 8 °C to 20 °C. June and July are the coldest months and are noticeably cooler, with temperatures plunging just below 20°C by day and dropping to a slightly chilly 10°C by night. Frost is generally only a disturbance during winter, when exceedingly cold air masses infiltrate the area, causing real hazard for fruit and vegetable growers in southeastern Brazil.
